Individual Attention

An experienced and energizing staff who inspire a love of learning and who model the values we teach

High Level of Parent Involvement

Pilgrim’s open viewing policy welcomes parents as observers and helpers in the classrooms. Pilgrim Parent-Teacher League is a full partner in school life.

Teaching to the Whole Child

Pilgrim teachers know that music, art and physical activity stimulates learning, as well as, physical, emotional and spiritual growth. Kinesthetic learning is a key element in every grade.

Friendly and welcoming place

Pilgrim hosts a full calendar of social and sporting events for kids and adults. All are welcome to join in the fun.

The Pilgrim Difference
Pilgrim students and their families find:
  • A friendly and welcoming atmosphere
  • A wealth of learning experience that take advantage of everything an urban cultural center offers
  • A positive approach to learning and guiding student social behavior
  • Classes designed to tap into a student's natural curiosity about the world
    • Students in Grades 1-8 are assigned to Multi-Grade homerooms.
    • All grades break out into grade level groups for Reading/English/Language Arts and Math, ensuring a student-teacher ratio of 18:1 or less
    • Grades 4, 5 and 6 have single grade classes for math.
    • Middle School math classes are adapted so that students work at their own levels, including high school algebra and geometry.

Pilgrim’s grade structure is a truly unique response to the often ignored reality that students in single grade classrooms are not all functioning at that grade level. Teachers are sensitive to this, and our combined grade classroom approach allows them to tailor learning to where students are, rather than where their grade level says they should be.

  •  boysreading

  • Reading/English/Language Arts

Students learn reading skills using fiction and non-fiction text that interests them. Experienced teachers guide students through classic and popular titles. Through writing, speaking, formal argument and film-making, students master the skills needed for effective communication.

    Social Studies

Students explore important themes in all areas of social studies through project based learning. They share their ideas in the books that they write, the conversations they have with students in our partner schools around the city, and in the presentations they make to the whole school community.

  • The Arts at Pilgrim

Students experience professional theatre, orchestra and opera performances. For lower grade students, art and music weave in and out of all instruction. They express themselves with drums, Orff instruments and raps made just for them. Upper grade students participate in chorus, band, and music appreciation, all led by professional musicians from the community.

    Christian Education

Students learn stories from the Bible, lead weekly chapel services and provide service to others in the community. Teachers encourage questions from students about faith and topics related to God and religion. Every child is able to develop his/her own personal spirituality.

  • Early Childhood Education

All programs for 3, 4 and 5 year olds at Pilgrim are play-based, half day sessions. Instructional themes allow children to ask questions and investigate ideas that are important to them. Pilgrim’s half-day options allow parents to create the learning day appropriate to the needs of their individual child. Play-based programs foster creative and critical thinking skills, prepare children to read with comprehension and nurture positive social interaction.
