Water Lead Testing Results 2017

Dear Pilgrim School Families,

Lead in drinking water can be detrimental to the growing child in the day care or school environment. To protect Illinois children from possible exposure to lead in drinking water, Governor Bruce Rauner and the General Assembly of Illinois passed Public Act 99-0922 requiring schools and daycares to sample for lead contamination in water.

This Act requires the oldest school buildings, those built before January 1, 1987, to complete water testing by the end of 2017. Schools built between January 2, 1987 and January 1, 2000 must complete testing by the end of 2018. The Act requires that parents and guardians of students be notified of lead results greater than or equal to five parts per billion (ppb). We are notifying you of all test results.

Pilgrim met requirements for testing by having samples taken for 24 fixtures.

  • No lead detected in 16 of the 24 fixtures.
  • Above 2 ppb (parts per billion), but below 5 ppb billion in 8 of the 24 fixtures. These fixtures include the following:
    • The faucet in the girls’ bathroom east sink
    • The faucet in the girls’ bathroom middle sink
    • The faucet in the girls’ bathroom west sink
    • The faucet in the annex classroom
    • The faucet in the upper grade math classroom
    • The faucet in the kitchen sink with the shallow basin
    • The water fountain in the lower grade hallway (This water fountain is now shut down.)
  • Above 5 ppb (parts per billion) in 1 of 24 fixtures: the faucet in the 1st/2nd Grade Classroom. (The water to this fixture has been turned off until it can be replaced.)

Even though Pilgrim did test in summer 2016 for lead in our water sources and found nothing detectable, the current law has stricter guidelines than the home testing kits that Pilgrim used could provide. We are in the process of creating a mitigation plan to ensure that none of our fixtures have detectable lead. You will soon be informed of the specifics of this plan.

We want to assure you that safe water use at our facility for the children is of upmost important to us. We have also posted the results of the testing on the school website. If you would like more information on lead testing and safety, please contact Dr. Patricia Braun, CLEF School Nurse consultant, at (630) 595-9310 or visit the following website:

If you have questions related to this letter, please contact me at the School office and I will be glad to answer any further questions.

Sincerely, Chris Comella
